Mark's thoughts for 9-19-10:

"Thomas Jefferson said, "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."   Jeffersonian Cyclopedia, p. 271

I have heard from many people that I meet in District 41-Baltimore City that they have not seen much progress and that the current delegation is not truly representing their interests.  They question themselves if they want another four years of this "status quo" leadership.

As Jefferson says in the quote above, seems like there has been a wasting of the people's labors - taxes - if there has been no real progress.   I have not seen it myself and I want to bring real progress to District 41 and Maryland.  It does not take four years to learn how a system works before making any progress.  It certainly does not mean that that is how the political system works.  If that is the way the incumbents think, then it is time to give them a retirement and elect responsible people to do the work.

9-20-10: Arrogance vs Humility

All too often arrogance accompanies strength, and we must never assume that justice is on the side of the strong. The use of power must always be accompanied by moral choice.    - Theodore Bikel

Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be the first in love. I want you to be the first in moral excellence. I want you to be the first in generosity.   - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Both quotes from http://www.wisdomquotes.com/

I offer these two quotes for two purposes, to remind all of us of our need for balance in life and the importance of humility.  As the quote on my home page from the book On Two Wings: Humble Faith and Common Sense at the American Founding refers to "power," we must be careful that we do not express an arrogance that has the power to demean others of their equal value as members of this great State and Nation.  Reflect on Dr. King's quote and note that he puts others ahead of himself because he has the CONFIDENCE in his faith, in his character, and in his desire to empower others to know and love life as he does.  Bikel's quote above refers to the dangers of underestimating the people one serves in public office when they have not been represented to their satisfaction.  What is most important is to make sure that the people are heard, respected, and understood.  It does not stop there, one must be consistent in their representation of who they are and what they value within themselves.

The current delegates of District 41, while they are to be respected for being elected, their work has not been consistent with what the people truly desire.   Some of the people told me that they wished they were more vocal and effective.  They wished they were more in tune with their constituents (not customers as one delegate calls them, which is really sad).   I promise that I will be consistent, listen and respect, communicate throughly so that we will understand each other and go forward with a united front in pursuit of what is best and right for District 41.   I promise to have monthly forums with the communities so that we can have a responsive representation that is equipped with the knowledge and understanding of the real concerns of the people who are to be first.
